Can You Make Money on YouTube?

Yes, absolutely! YouTube is filled with thousands of users who are making a living by entertaining and/or educating people.

Video creators are teaching, creating product reviews, making tutorials, making people laugh, and all kinds of other things. And you can too.

How Do You Make Money on YouTube?

There are lots of ways to make money on YouTube. This article will detail all of them.

Join the YouTube Partner Program

This is the most straightforward was to earn money on YouTube. You simply join the YouTube Partner Program, upload engaging videos, and then collect advertising revenue (which is based on the number of views and ad clicks your videos receive).

Following are the requirements for joining the YouTube Partner Program:

  • You should have at least 1,000 subscribers subscribed to your channel.
  • 4,000 valid public watch hours over the past 12 months.
  • The YouTube partner program should be available in your country.
  • You should have a linked AdSense account.
  • Comply with all the YouTube monetization policies.

If you meet the 4,000 hour and 1,000 subscriber thresholds, then you can apply for the program. If you are not approved on the first attempt, you can re-apply again in 30 days as long as all the criteria are still met.

As a partner, YouTube expects you to stay active. If you are inactive for more than 6 months and fall below the threshold, YouTube may remove you from the partner program.

Partner with Brands and Businesses as an Influencer

Influencer marketing can be a very effective way for brands and businesses to get some visibility. And of course, it’s a great way for YouTube personalities to earn money.

Many brands and businesses like this type of advertising because it gives them access to highly targeted audiences.

Finding sponsors is not too difficult. In fact, there are some great websites (that are certified by YouTube) where influencers and sponsors can connect.

A good popular place to look is Channel Pages.

Another really good site is called “Grapevine Village”.

On this platform, you will need 10,000 YouTube subscribers to become a member; if you don’t have that many subscribers, but your audience is super engaged, you can apply for an exception.

If your subscriber base is large enough, then sponsors will begin to contact you directly, so remember to include your email address in your YouTube about section and indicate that it is “for business inquiries”. For example:

Pro Tip: When promoting a brand, be sure it is something you actually believe in. Your owe that to your audience. You’ll maintain trust and credibility. And you’ll be able to sleep well at night.

Do Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is similar to influencer marketing in that you will be promoting products. But in this case, you will make money by referring your subscribers to offers through special links, and if anyone makes a purchase, then you will get a commission. This is by far one of my favorite ways to earn money.

There are a number of great companies out there the have affiliate marketing programs. Some of the best ones are: ClickBank, Maxbounty, OfferVault, and Amazon Affiliates.

One of the best ways to do affiliate marketing on YouTube is through reviews.

When people are ready to buy something, they often look for reviews first. If you can convince people that a product is high quality, then they will be more likely to buy it. You can invite people to purchase the product through your link (posted below your video).

One great review technique is called “unboxing”. With this method, you buy the actual product and then open the box on video and talk about the experience as you do it. What do you like? What do you not like? This is a great thing to do for products that you plan to buy anyway. Why not make a video when you open it at home?

Pro tip: Go through the pros AND the cons of the product. This will create trust. And if a product is not that great, then offer an alternative. You can even make a review video for an alternative product and then – at the end of the video – direct people to your review of the superior product.

Create How-to Videos

How-to videos are a great way to get lots of views on YouTube.

You can make videos showing your audience how to solve problems and then you can provide affiliate links to the products used in your videos.

Sell Your Own Products/Services on YouTube

The process of selling your own products is similar to affiliate marketing; the difference is that you will be selling your own products (and you get to keep all of the profit you make from your sales).

With this method, you will simply ask people to visit your online store where they can peruse your products.

Pro Tip: With this method, you can start your own affiliate program and have affiliate marketers sell your products for you.

Sell Digital Products

People look to YouTube to find answers to all kinds of questions. You can answer those questions. You can provide tutorials for all kinds of things, from complex math problems to video game walkthroughs.

So how do you make money? At the end of your video, you can offer an e-book for sale, providing a comprehensive guide on the subject. You can also offer access to premium videos that go into much more detail that are behind a pay wall, so visitors must pay to access this content. You can host these videos on your own website, or you can host them on a platform such as udemy.

Here’s an example of someone who is using multiple methods to monetize his YouTube channel:

This is a financial education channel where the host talks about the Stock Market. Notice the links in the video description. He has affiliate product links, links to his own products, a “Weekly Mentorship Program”, links to the YouTube Creator academy program. This is a fantastic example of someone who is using many different methods to make money on YouTube.

Set Up a Patreon Account

If you do not already know, a Patreon is a sort of crowdfunding, in which fans of a YouTube channel can join a subscription for a certain amount of money at set intervals.

It could be either X amount of dollars every month, or whenever you release new content.

Patreon is fairly common for podcasts, but it is becoming more widespread for YouTube channels.

Getting subscribers on Patreon is all about giving value to your audience. If people do not like what they’re getting, they won’t be willing to support you financially.

Take a look at the above example; Carlos gives a tier-based exclusive reward for his subscribers. Things like early access to content, discounts, merch, gifts, collabs, shoutouts etc.

Although YouTube does have its own “YouTube Fan Funding” integrated into their platform, it is very limited and only gives the YouTuber one time donations as opposed to Patreon which can provide a steady stream of income.
