Pinterest is a social media platform that relies on the sharing of images for its content. It has over 400 million monthly active users and is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world. It consists of “pins” which are basically images that a user uploads or links to from another website and “boards” where all the pins are saved, collected and organized.
Pinterest has gained popularity as the “visual search engine” where people search specifically for images. It has also gained interest from a lot of businesses that want to promote their products visually.
The answer is technically, no. You cannot make money directly from Pinterest. However, you can definitely use Pinterest as an important part of your overall strategy for making money online. Pinterest is a fantastic way to grow a following, and for that reason, it is especially useful as a way to get people to visit your website, affiliate links, or products (more on that below).
There are three main ways to earn money from Pinterest: 1) Send your Pinterest followers to your website 2) Refer your Pinterest followers to products from other companies using referral links 3) Send your Pinterest followers to your own product offerings. I’ll elaborate on each of these methods below.
If you own an existing blog or website that is monetized through advertisements (such as Google Adsense), then you can use Pinterest to drive traffic to your blog/website, thereby earning ad revenue. And you can of course combine this monetization method with other methods. One great Pinterest feature is that it lets you use your pins to link directly to just about anything you want (like your website). This is an advantage over Instagram, which does not let you add links (unless you have more than 10,000 followers).
The key thing to remember about Pinterest is that half the users visit the platform in order to get shopping ideas because they are ready to make a purchase. And you can take advantage of this behavior through affiliate programs… you can earn money by referring your Pinterest followers directly to other companies’ products through referral links. With most affiliate programs, you’ll earn a commission for every purchase made by one of your referred followers. With Pinterest you don’t even need to have a blog or a website in order to refer people through your affiliate links; you can usually link directly to the product or service on offer (though you’ll always want to check the terms of service of your affiliate program to ensure this is permitted). Just keep in mind that when posting a link to your website/product, you should never use link shorteners (like bit.ly). This is not permitted under Pinterest terms of service.
If you have your own product, Pinterest can be a great way of getting traffic to your sales page. Whether you sell physical products or information products or even online classes, Pinterest is a great source of traffic.
The beauty of Pinterest is that it is its own search engine, and it is not as complicated and competitive as google, you can easily rank popular keywords. To do so, just follow the steps below.
Your account should be a business account; if it is not a business account then convert it into one… and make sure you have a verified domain. With these two pieces in place, rich pins should be enabled.
Let’s say the products you are trying to sell are skincare products. If skincare is your niche, you can type in a general keyword like skincare. Pinterest will show you popular keywords that are related to “skincare”.
Go to some of the posts that are ranking near the top and write down the keywords your competitors are using. Also, take note of the tactics they’re using to bring in followers and traffic. Let’s look at one example:
This is one of the top posts that ranked under skincare; notice how they have tips on how to use products and it totally does not appear as if they are trying to sell you something. The primary purpose of this post is to get the target audience engaged. Then, after they are engaged, it is not that hard to get them to visit the target website.
So let’s go to their site:
On their actual site, you’ll notice this business is explaining a skincare process in detail. Also, they are not putting on a hard sell. They’re just recommending products. You may also notice that there are other advertising banners on the site, likely earning some nice revenue.
Now that you have researched your competition and compiled your list of keywords, you’ll want to customize your profile’s title, description and username, so they are optimized according to your target keywords.
Use your target keywords at the beginning of your board name, and use several of them in your board description. You can fit a lot of them here as the limit is 500 characters. And don’t forget to select a board category in your settings (if an appropriate board category is not available, then choose “other”). Also, add your targeted keywords to your Pin’s title, Pin description and Post description. Also add some keywords as hashtags in your pin description, but use a maximum of 5 hashtags per pin; otherwise you could get hit by the Pinterest spam filter.
Save pins to your most relevant board; if that is not possible, you can find the most relevant board on your profile and do it there. This will help Pinterest give the right keyword context for your pin.
To be effective and engaging on Pinterest, you’ll need some visually appealing images on your boards. Creating really nice images does not take that much effort; you don’t have to be a graphic designer to create amazing pins as there are a lot of free tools out there (and paid ones too if you want those) that can create stunning images. Canva is one of the better platforms out there, and you can actually do quite a bit with their free account. It is very easy to just go to their site and start making quality pins instantly.
You can even type in “Pinterest pins” in the search bar and it will show you thousands of pin templates:
This is one of the easiest ways to create amazing pins.
When making pins, ensure you are providing real value. You don’t want to come across as an ad. You want to give tips, advice, how-to’s etc that engage your target audience and get them to click your link.
And create a compelling call-to-action in your pins, leading people to “more tips” or other content (probably not directly to the product you are trying to sell).
In order to grow your influence on Pinterest, you have to be active on Pinterest. You should be pinning a lot and paying attention to how your pins are performing. You should continuously engage with your audience and you should be super responsive.
Try a variety of different methods, experiment, and stick to what gives you the best results. For example: if your “how-to” posts are getting more engagement than your “product comparisons” then focus on “how to” posts.
Another technique is to find niche specific group boards that don’t have many contributors and add your pins there.
Also, you can actually message people directly if you want. This is a manual process and may take some time, but it is a good way to grow when you are just starting out. Just go to a top post in your niche and select individual profiles.
This particular post has 2.4k Likes; you can just go to the like section and go to individual profiles and message those people directly:
Just be careful and do not get too spammy with this method.
There are many Pinterest accounts whose owners don’t have enough time to manage them and will gladly pay good money for someone else to manage the account. You’ll need to be very familiar with Pinterest to get a gig like this. And you’ll probably want a developed account that you can present as proof of your expertise. To get started, you’ll need to create a profile on a site like UpWork or Freelancer. Then, spend some time doing this for a low price in order to get some good reviews. Then you can start charging higher prices. Pinterest virtual assistants can make anywhere from $500 – $4000 a month or more.
I hope this overview was helpful; though, undoubtedly, many questions remain unanswered. But that’s the beauty of Conexa, if you have questions, you can simply ask them below in the comments, and I will personally answer them.
