One of the more critical aspects of SEO is backlinks, also referred to as inbound links or external links.
Backlinks are one of the most effective methods for ranking well on Google.
Backlinks help your SEO results. They indicate to search engines that your content is meaningful to other sources. The more backlinks you receive from other sources, the more meaningful Google regards your website, presuming the backlinks are coming from the right sources.
So how are backlinks earned? There are three fundamental ways.
1. Natural links
Natural links to your site come without you doing anything apart from creating engaging copy and providing exceptional service. People who have experience with your business and write about it, refer to your website content or write an article or review.
2. Manual links
You get manual links when you approach a business and request that they link their site to yours. Another strategic way to get a manual link is to guest blog for a relevant website and include a site page of yours in the copy.
3. Self-created links
Self-created links are when you add a backlink to your site in a blog comment, a forum, or an online directory of some sort.
This is an easy way to get backlinks and bring short-term success. But in the long run, it can also negatively impact your reputation if it falls into the category of Black Hat Seo, meaning unethical SEO tactics.
Is the Link relevant?
To be effective backlinks must be relevant. If you have a jewelry website, and as a favor, your friend who owns a hotel link to you it’s not going to help you unless you have relatable content. Like announcing that your jewelry will be displayed in the hotel shop.
Follow vs. Nofollow
In simple terms, the difference is that follow links to improve your search engine rankings. Nofollow links don’t.
A site owner can control whether a link is a follow or No-Follow with a No-follow tag. Visually there is no difference to the site visitor.
While you want to follow backlinks, a No-Follow link from a high-quality site can still benefit your brand or business because of awareness. However, it does nothing for SEO.
