On Friday 4th July 2025, we were honoured to join Port of Newcastle and the Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, along with Sharon Claydon MP, the Federal Member for Newcastle and Tim Crackenthorpe MP, the State Member for Newcastle to unveil the final Master Plan for the Clean Energy Precinct.
Set to be operational by 2030, the visionary 220-hectare precinct is designed to support the production, storage, distribution, and export of clean energy— including green hydrogen and ammonia. This landmark project will position Newcastle as a global hydrogen leader and cement the Hunter Region as a clean energy powerhouse by the end of the decade.
A critical enabler of this project is the expansion of coNEXA’s Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme, which will supply up to 22.5ML/day of recycled water to the precinct in addition to the recycled water already distributed to our customers on Kooragang Island. This will be sourced from treated effluent from Hunter Water’s Edgeworth and Toronto Wastewater Treatment Works — water that would otherwise be discharged to the ocean.
coNEXA’s expanded recycled water scheme will provide high quality recycled water that will be used as the feedstock for the hydrogen production, cooling applications and other non-potable water uses throughout the Clean Energy Precinct. As part of the Front-End Engineering Design phase coNEXA has progressed the design of the storage, transfer and treatment infrastructure. coNEXA has also undertaken extensive stakeholder engagement, environmental assessments and commenced engagement for regulatory and planning approvals.
This is a huge step forward for our region and for Australia’s clean energy future — and we’re thrilled to play a part.
